Subject and frame: a square 1:1 composition. A strip of oak bark, peeled away from a fallen log, shows its pale inner face carved with bark beetle tunnels. One straight mother gallery climbs the centre, and nine fine larval galleries fan off it in widening, comb-like curves. At the bottom end of the mother gallery sits a single small brown beetle, and a thread of wood dust lies along one tunnel. The gallery pattern fills the whole frame; the centre tunnel is the sharpest part, the edges drop off into soft blur, and dark, rough outer bark curls along the left edge. Colour: pale cream wood set against dark tunnels, rust-brown wood dust and the beetle's glossy chestnut shell. Fine fibre and tunnel edges remain crisp within the focus plane. Camera and light: a real photograph, a macro shot at 1:1 life-size magnification with a 100mm macro lens wide open at about f/3.2. The focus plane is razor-thin and melts into soft blur a few millimetres away. A single dominant soft, diffused light comes from above and slightly to one side, shaping gentle relief and exposing true surface micro-texture, fine stippling and tiny hairs with clean, controlled specular highlights. Aim for real tactile detail at believable scale, low-noise sensor clarity, and a crisp, neutral colour finish with delicate tonal separation inside the sharp plane.
