Under warm late-afternoon light, a racetrack holds its finish line as a broad white stripe painted across the running surface — and directly on that stripe, a row of small analog clocks forms a physical barrier, each one a round-faced timepiece standing upright on its own short post, dial showing only plain hands and tick marks, lined shoulder to shoulder the full width of the track. The barrier keeps closing: between its last two clocks a narrow gap is shrinking shut, and toward that gap runs an exhausted worker in work clothes, an armful of folders clutched to his chest, one foot already forward on the stripe in a weary, straining stride. These clocks are solid and heavy, plainly an obstacle to reach and pass rather than decoration floating above the track. Light rakes along the surface from the warm late-afternoon sun, throwing long shadows from the clock posts across the painted stripe, with a plain, unlettered grandstand and sky behind.
